From using dirty sponges, to scrubbing stains, to cleaning without rubber gloves, there are a number of mistakes that can hinder your cleaning efforts rather than help. It’s easy to pick up bad habits, and believe it or not, cleaning in the wrong way can result in more bacteria around the house.
So that your efforts aren’t wasted, here are some of our expert tips on cleaning mistakes to avoid around the home.
Wiping with a dirty sponge
How often do you replace or disinfect your kitchen sponge or cloth? Simply rinsing your sponge isn’t enough – bacteria and bits of food will still lurk in the sponge’s crevices, and can actually end up spreading more germs around your kitchen. Disinfect your sponge by putting it in the dishwasher every week, or put it in the microwave in a bowl of water to kill the germs.
Not loading the dishwasher properly
Believe it or not, there is a way that you should load the dishwasher. Forks can point up, but make sure to mix up the way that you place the spoons so that they all get washed properly. Spoons can end up “spooning” very easily, which means they don’t get cleaned properly and have to be put through the dishwasher again.
Using spray cleaner on devices
Resist the temptation to spritz your cleaning spray directly onto your television, LCD screens, laptops, and any other devices. The spray and the fibres from cloths and paper towels can cause damage to the device, so it’s better to use a micro fibre cloth and to spray onto the cloth, rather than directly onto the screen.
Scrubbing stains out of carpets and upholstery
Spots and spills inevitably happen, but not treating the stain properly can cause permanent damage to the fibres and ruin the look of your carpets and upholstery. As soon as a stain occurs, blot it with some paper or a towel. Tackling the stain immediately significantly increases your chances of getting it out. Then, gently rub the stain with a mix of white vinegar and water to remove the stain. Vigorously rubbing the stain only dislodges the fibres and leaves your carpet or upholstery looking worn.
Cleaning without rubber gloves
If you buy regular household cleaners (that aren’t labelled as “green”), and you don’t wear rubber gloves to clean, you’re exposing your skin to so many toxic chemicals. Our skin absorbs pretty much anything it comes in contact with, and can cause our hands to dry out and get irritated. Wear rubber gloves – or gloves that are lined inside so they’re more comfortable to wear – or better still, invest in green cleaning products instead. At PCC Cleaning, we only use eco-friendly cleaning products as it’s much better for both our health and the environment.
