We’ve had our fair share of snowfall in Vancouver recently, and although it’s caused a few travel disruptions and snowy driveways, it’s always nice seeing the city blanketed in snow. However, now that the temperature has increased slightly and the snowfall has turned to rain, the beautiful snow will soon turn to slush and that only means one thing – a dirty house! Follow these simple tips to help keep winter slush out of the house this season to make sure that your cleaning efforts aren’t completely wasted!
Leave the shoes at the door

This is a no-brainer, but when it’s snowy and slushy outside, leave your shoes at the door! When you’re grocery shopping and bringing the bags into the house, or you need to run back into the house to grab something, it’s easy to forget about your dirty shoes and soon enough your floors are covered with a dusting of muddy snow. In this case, make sure to knock off any excess water or keep a towel by the door so you can quickly give your shoes a wipe.
Designate an outdoor area for shoes
Whether it’s a rack in the porch area or a small box in the garden, designating an outdoor area for shoes will mean that you don’t have wet and muddy shoes knocking around the house. Store your shoes in a plastic box (and either leave the top off slightly, or drill holes in the side for ventilation) so that the excess snow doesn’t end up melting all over your clean floors.
Invest in a dirt buster
If you live in a condo you may not have an outdoor space to store your shoes, so investing in a dirt buster is a great alternative. This is essentially a doormat that’s designed to protect your floors and scrape away mud and dirt from your shoes.
Hire a home cleaner
Sometimes it’s impossible to avoid trudging slush and snow through the house, and it can feel like an uphill battle when you’re constantly cleaning the floors and keeping the home dirt free. Hiring a home cleaner can help to take the weight off your shoulders and completely reduce your chore load.
