When you undergo a home renovation, the post construction cleaning process always requires a lot of work.
Every inch of your home gets covered in dust – from the window sills to the baseboards, to the walls to the light fixtures. Cleaning up after construction work is a tough job, so we’ve made it a little easier with this post construction cleaning checklist.
Windows + Window sills
You’ll probably know to clean the windows inside and out, but don’t forget to clean the window sills too. Clean the windows with micro fibre cloths, and wipe down the window sills to remove any dust and dirt.
Baseboards
Clean baseboards can really brighten up the room. Although we often forget about them, they can gather tons of dust and dirt that’s very visible if left untouched.
Walls
Believe it or not, walls can collect a significant amount of dust especially during construction work. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the walls, unless your walls are newly painted, and in which case stick to dry dusting instead. If you have textured wallpaper, use the vacuum brush attachment to get rid of the dust instead.
Lights
Use a feather duster to clean around your lighting fixtures and fan blades. You’ll be amazed how much dust and dirt will gather up here, so even though you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean you should ignore it!
Floors
Vacuum carpets and rugs thoroughly, and wash hard floors with an eco-friendly cleaner. Make sure to change the water regularly too so you’re not transferring the dirt back to the floor.
Shelves
Don’t forget about wiping the shelves! Remove anything sitting on the shelves and give it all a good clean.
Furniture
If there’s any upholstery in your home, make sure to give that a clean too. Use the upholstery attachment of your vacuum to clean furniture, window blinds, and other accessories. Remember, dust gets everywhere, so you need to make sure that every corner is covered.
Vents
Unscrew and clean out your vents with a vacuum and soapy water, and don’t forget to wipe out any drawers.
Ceilings
You probably can’t see it from down below, but a huge amount of dust can stick to your ceiling. Use a vacuum with a long hose, or a long-handled brush with a damp cloth attached to the end to pick up all the dust and dirt. Be careful when cleaning the ceiling especially if you’re using a step ladder as it can easily topple as you twist and reach up high, so we advise that someone holds the ladder for you.
